Henna artist applying detailed paste design to a client's hand at a beauty salon

What Henna Is and How It Works

Henna is a natural dye made from the dried and powdered leaves of the henna plant. When the paste is applied to skin and left to dry, it leaves behind a temporary stain that ranges from burnt orange to deep reddish-brown.

The art of henna has been practiced for thousands of years across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Traditionally used to celebrate weddings and festivals, it has grown into a globally loved form of body art that suits any occasion, from a bridal party to a birthday to a quiet afternoon treat for yourself.

At Rosée Atelier, the paste is applied freehand using a fine-tipped cone. The artist draws directly onto the skin, building patterns line by line. There are no stencils required for basic designs, though they can be used for very precise geometric work. The result is personal and handcrafted every time.

Once the paste is applied, it needs time to dry and absorb. The longer you leave it on, the deeper and longer-lasting the stain. After removal, the design starts as a light orange and darkens over the following 24 to 48 hours to its richest shade.

  • Plant-based paste with no synthetic dyes in natural henna
  • Stain deepens over the first 48 hours after removal
  • Safe for most skin types when pure henna is used
  • Lasts one to three weeks depending on placement and aftercare
  • Palms and soles stain darkest; ankles and wrists also stain well

How it works

What Happens During Your Henna Visit

From the moment you sit down to the moment the paste is ready to remove, here is how a henna appointment unfolds so you know exactly what to expect.

  1. 01

    Design consultation

You and the artist talk through the design, size, and placement. Bring reference images if you have them, or browse the portfolio on hand. The artist will suggest what works best for your skin area and the time you have available.

  2. 02

    Paste application

The artist applies henna paste directly to your skin using a cone with a fine tip. Depending on the complexity and size of the design, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour. You stay still while the paste is drawn on.

  3. 03

    Drying time

Once the design is complete, the paste needs to dry fully before it can be sealed or wrapped. This takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Avoid touching the paste during this stage so the pattern stays crisp.

  4. 04

    Sealing and removal instructions

The artist seals the dried paste with a sugar-lemon mixture to help it stay in place longer. You will be told how long to leave the paste on before scraping it off, and given aftercare guidance to protect the stain.

  5. 05

    The stain develops

After the paste is removed, the design appears light orange at first. Over the next 24 to 48 hours it darkens to a warm reddish-brown. The final depth of color depends on placement, your skin, and how well you follow the aftercare steps.

Why us

What the Experience Feels Like for You

Henna is one of the most relaxed beauty services you can book. Here is what the visit is actually like from your side of the chair.

No pain, no needles

The cone glides across the surface of your skin. There is no pressure, no heat, and no discomfort. Most clients find the application genuinely relaxing.

A chance to sit and breathe

While the paste dries you have a natural reason to sit still and do nothing. Many clients treat it as a quiet break in their day.

You leave with the design on

There is no waiting period at home before you see results. You walk out with the paste sealed and the design already visible, ready to develop over the next two days.

Fully temporary, no long-term commitment

The stain fades gradually as your skin naturally sheds. There is no removal process and no damage to the skin when pure henna is used.

Easy aftercare with things you already have

Keeping the stain dark mainly means keeping the area moisturized and avoiding prolonged soaking in water. No special products are required.

Suitable for most occasions and ages

Henna works for bridal events, festivals, birthdays, or simply as personal body art. It is gentle enough for most adults and older children when pure paste is used.

was at Rosee Atelier last week, and I had an amazing experience. The salon is beautiful and super clean, which is a top priority for me and something that is hard to find these days. The atmosphere and overall experience were incredible. The products they use are top quality. Kenya, my stylist, applied a treatment that left my hair extremely soft, silky, and shiny. My haircut and blowout turned out beautiful. I also decided to get a manicure and pedicure with Dakota, and she was amazing. She was gentle during the foot massage, and my nails came out beautiful. The entire experience was relaxing, exactly how a salon visit should be. Everyone at the salon was friendly, kind, and professional. I haven’t felt this relaxed and satisfied after a salon visit in a long time. I’ve already booked my next appointment for two weeks from now! I highly recommend Rosee Atelier!

Henna Questions, Answered

  1. 01

How long does a henna stain last?

Most henna stains last one to three weeks. Placement makes a big difference. Palms and soles, where the skin is thickest, hold color the longest. Wrists, ankles, and the back of the hand fall in the middle range. Areas with thinner skin, like the upper arm or shoulder, tend to fade faster. Keeping the area moisturized and avoiding long soaks in water will help the stain last as long as possible.
  2. 02

Is henna safe for my skin?

Pure, plant-based henna is safe for most people. It is important to note that so-called black henna, which contains a chemical called PPD, is not the same product and can cause serious skin reactions. The henna used here is natural. If you have very sensitive skin or known plant allergies, mention this before your appointment so the artist can advise you.
  3. 03

How long should I leave the paste on?

A minimum of two hours gives a reasonable stain. Leaving it on for four to six hours, or even overnight, produces a much deeper and longer-lasting result. The artist will give you a specific recommendation based on where your design is placed and how dark you want the color to be.
  4. 04

Can I book henna for a wedding or group event?

Yes. Bridal henna and group bookings are some of the most common reasons clients come in. If you are planning for a bridal party or a larger group, reach out in advance so we can make sure enough time is set aside for everyone.
  5. 05

What should I do right after the paste is removed?

Avoid water on the design for at least an hour after removing the paste. Apply a thin layer of natural oil, such as coconut or olive oil, to the stained area. Skip soap directly on the design for the first day. The stain will continue to darken for up to 48 hours, so do not judge the final color until then.
  6. 06

Will henna stain my clothes or bedding?

Fresh paste can transfer if it rubs against fabric before it dries fully. Once the paste is dry and sealed it is much less likely to transfer, but be cautious with light-colored fabric in the first few hours. If you leave the paste on overnight, wrapping the design loosely in cloth or plastic wrap can help protect your bedding.
  7. 07

What areas of the body can henna be applied to?

Henna can be applied almost anywhere on the body. The most popular areas are the hands, wrists, forearms, feet, and ankles. Shoulders, the back, and the stomach are also common choices for larger designs. The artist can advise on which placement will give you the richest stain for the design you have in mind.
  8. 08

How far in advance should I book before a special event?

For a bridal or event booking, try to schedule the henna two to three days before the occasion. This gives the stain time to reach its darkest shade before the big day. Booking your appointment well in advance is always a good idea, especially around busy seasons.
